Kirsten Stein

Ceramic, Bronze and Stone Sculpture

Kirsten Stein studied art in her native Denmark before settling in Palo Alto in 1970. She studied art at Foothill College. Attending workshops with nationally known artists has provided much inspiration for her.

Stein's recent work includes minimalist figurative sculptures in three different media.

Ceramic sculptures are high-fired in an electric kiln with a glaze that has the soft look of metal or stone. Stein works mainly with stoneware and sculpture clays. Some sculptures are made into functional candleholders and menorahs.

Bronze casting of her work is done by a local foundry. Some pieces are one of a kind, others are cast in limited editions.

Stone carving is presently in soapstone and alabaster, with marble work in her future plans.

Stein enjoys using simple strong lines to convey powerful emotions, of which each medium 'speaks' in a different way. At times, whimsical, unplanned pieces just "happen".

Stein believes that art should have a prominent place in our daily lives. It enriches our world.
